Or, at least, that was the case until a week ago when OpenAI released a preview of a new version, OpenAI o1, that it claims can “think” in a new way, especially in areas that require rigorous reasoning like mathematics (check out this post by AI sceptic Will Lockett for a contrary view). Nonetheless, one of Claude’s strengths is its more human-like, conversational style compared to ChatGPT.

But back to the vexed 1 + 1 = 2 question. What stoked my curiosity about this was learning, many years ago, that Bertrand Russell and A.N. Whitehead in their monumental tract Principia Mathematica that aimed to put mathematics on formal logical foundations, were only able to conclude that 1 + 1 = 2 after hundreds of pages of logical analysis.

But then I pressed him as to how he could be sure of that conclusion. That was when things got interesting, bearing in mind that critics of AI implementations that use the large language model (LLM) approach deny that LLM’s can be said to know anything, given that all they do is predict the next word, or token, to a text based on the preceding text and the vast body of data used to train them.

It is quite enjoyable interacting with Claude, who effortlessly and almost instantaneously responds to every prompt. Not only that, he responds very constructively to any and every point on which his previous answer is challenged, congratulating the human interrogator on the insightfulness and profundity of his or her insights.

With all this flattery, I felt able to advance my own hypothesis as to why we can be confident that 1 + 1 = 2 that bypasses Russell and Whitehead’s tedious screeds of symbolic logic. And guess what, Claude thought my theory “is excellent and cuts right to the heart of the matter.” A top bloke, this Claude! Smart too!

I know we shouldn’t anthropomorphize AIs, not at this stage anyway, but it would seem churlish not to to do so for such a broad-minded fellow.
